Meet Volkan Yorulmaz

I was in the spotlight of Philip Morris International Business Solutions Newsletter for August 2022. I answered 7 key questions so that my colleagues had the chance to know me better. You can find the answers and questions below. Also, a video content about it is here:

1. To start with, can you tell us something unusual about yourself?

Generally, people think about finance professionals as solely analytical persons who are strong at working with numbers, not the words. Yes, I also like to work with the numbers and take actions based on data but working with words, telling stories and experiences are what I am passionate about. I am currently writing for four blogs and creating contents is my favourite spare time activity. Creating interactions with people upon sharing content is like a mystery. I love to share my perceptions, feelings and experiences, and when people read and react, that makes me feel heard and highly satisfied!

2. What was your first job?

My first job was an associate position at PwC. Just after completing my MBA, I started to work for PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and I learnt a lot there in three years. Having the opportunity to see various companies from different sectors and working in cooperation with different team leaders opened the way for learning on the fly. PwC added some key experiences like acting as a well-disciplined professional, becoming a team member and then leading a team.  On top of that, I invested in myself and gained CPA certification and passed Capital Markets exams when I was working in PwC. When I was a senior associate, I received a job offer from General Motors (GM) and then I moved from audit to automobile sector. I started as an Accountant in GM and it was a move from one side of the table to the other side: I started to exercise the profession that I audited before, I got familiar with the tax declarations, CRM systems for financial reporting and worked cooperatively with different functions of the business. When I was leaving GM, I was the Internal Controls Coordinator, and this role enabled me to have a presence against the Management Team.

3. How long have you been at PMI and what is your current role here?

When I check my LinkedIn profile, it says that I am working for PMI for the last 9 years and 3 months. Instead of counting the years behind, I am much more focused on the gained experiences and the success stories that we will have altogether. PMI’s smoke-free future vision is so broad, and I believe that each and every colleague has a special role in achieving this objective.

When I joined PMI, it was 2013 and I started as a General Ledger and Tax Analyst in Philsa (production company in Turkey, now it is called PMTM). The key challenge in those years was adapting our financial statements to Turkish Financial Reporting Standards which was a new requirement starting from 2013 fiscal year. Those early days in PMI were so hard with adaptation to a new company, new people, new way of working but also it was one of the best times of my career because we really had fun when we worked together till the midnights. Then in 2017, I was promoted to the Senior Tax Analyst position in the newly found Tax department in Philsa. One of the key skills this role taught me was storytelling or in other words narrating with insights. While tracking the new tax legislations and their impacts on our business, I had to present it clearly to the management team on time and provide not only the highlights but also potential actions to be taken. While I was working as a Senior Tax Analyst, I had the opportunity to work as a Guest Auditor in Corporate Audit during Romania taxation audit. That experience made me find out that working in an international environment was a perfect match for me. Then in 2020, I moved from domestic affiliate to duty free affiliate in Turkey (PM Travel Retail Turkey, PMTR-T) as Manager Finance Legal Entity. All job experiences gave me the opportunity to come out of my comfort zone, meet new people and enrich my perspective. In Manager Finance Legal Entity role, I was able to learn about a unique business-like Duty Free from different angles. The move was a transformation because I not only moved from Domestic affiliate to Duty Free affiliate, but I also moved from my hometown to Istanbul during the hectic pandemic period. For the first time in my career, I reported to a non-Turkish manager who is not located in Turkey and my responsibilities made me start to work in a global environment with different teams from all over the world.

After the Finance transformation within Duty Free, I was promoted to the Manager Finance LE & R2R. I started to supervise the finance analyst in Hong Kong Duty Free affiliate so that I also started to learn from her experiences. Now with Finance as co-pilot, I am as close as possible to the business. I attend regular weekly meetings with Eurasia commercial team and have a space to deliver my expectations and reminders but also provide my comments and guidance on key issues to my stakeholder. Besides, this role teaches me to negotiate and talk with other heads of functions, and provides exposure to other departments like Commercial, Legal, Procurement, Business Solutions, CoE Finance, etc. I am so happy to be a part of PMI Duty Free and I feel “space to deliver” here, thanks to our DF Finance team for showing their full support to the initiatives I bring. That makes my efforts meaningful.

4. Lately, you have submitted an initiative to the Innovator’s Club. Can you please tell us what drove you to come up with your initiative and what was the final result of your submission?

In Turkey, we need to document contracts which are subject to stamp tax calculation and then before the closure of the year, we need to notarize this list of contracts. Previously this process was followed up in ordinary stamp tax book by handwriting. Managing a stamp tax book required a lot of manual actions. It was not possible to share certain pieces of information with other colleagues without taking pictures of the pages. A repository was created for all contracts initiated in PM Turkey with the help of Microsoft Lists. In the newly created list, we can easily maintain key information such as contract date, name of the party, subject, start and end dates, tax base, tax amount and status. In addition, MS Lists has a feature to embed links, so we can maintain the link to the soft copies of contracts or CLM where we can see the approval status in the contract lifecycle management platform.

As a meaning creator, I like to share my key learning with my teammates and colleagues. The Innovator’s Club opens the way for knowledge and experience sharing and it motivates followers by the success stories of other colleagues. This motivated me to share my quick win with a wider audience through the Innovator’s Club. When I saw that my submission was prized in R2R that made me extremely happy.

5. Would you recommend other colleagues at PMI to take part in Innovator’s Club and if so, why?

Certainly, I would recommend my colleagues at PMI to take part in Innovator’s Club so that they can create meaning for other colleagues as well. The Innovator’s Club is a great tool for spreading the good examples and let our colleagues know about them! It is a living repository where people can be inspired from while benefiting from the wins of their colleagues.

6. If you could have lunch with one person ever living in this world - who would it be and why?

I would like to have this special lunch with Jeff Bezos. Although I read the book “The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon”, I feel like there are still a lot that I can learn from his mindset. The skillset he applied in his leadership is so brave and uncommon. I would also like to ask him about the negative feedback (on his management style) he receives from his employees. And possibly, I can’t stop myself asking which areas to invest in both for personal growth and financial freedom.

7. After hours, what are you passionate about?

I love to walk by the seaside. Thanks God, İstanbul is a lovely city with great walking paths. While I am listening to my favorite podcasts, I walk and reach my daily walking target. Apart from its positive impact on my well-being, I also have space to think about my projects and plans while walking. When I am at home, I read books from my e-book reader. Since 2019, I am mostly reading from e-book reader because I can take notes and highlight sections of the books. After completing the book, I work on these notes and convert them into blog posts. Writing is my passionate hobby. You can read my notes from the books I read in my blog dedicated to such contents: MyHighlightz.blogspot.com

  • Her şeyin başı sorumluluğunu yerine getirmek
  • Planlı ol, not al, ajandanı yönet

Title’ınızın “assistant” ya da “trainie” unvanını içermesi, önemli toplantıları dahil edilmemeniz, ofiste geçen belirli bir sürenin basit ofis işleriyle geçiyor olması sizi demotive etmesin.
Planlı ol, not al, ajandanı yönet

We were there because: “Wir Leben Autos”

The Istanbul Auto Show took place from 29 October through 7 November in the 120,000 square meter CNR EXPO Istanbul center. We, as GM Türkiye, were there as a whole team on 28 October. Before the event, my colleagues emphasized that I was lucky to have the chance to attend such a big event just after my third month in the company, and I also believe that I was really lucky to be a part of this family, on the way back to home.

Opel is celebrating its 20th anniversary in Turkey and due to this we were gifted to visit the Auto Show in Istanbul which is organized every two years. I was visiting the Auto Show for the first time in my life. So, before the attending, I caught up with the news about it, and one thing was common: “This year, organizers were promising a better event than ever, with major automakers around the world.”

When I entered the CNR EXPO, I saw that each brand was really well-prepared for this special event with unique shows and presentations. Objectively, our Opel brand was one of the most outstanding and most visited stands of the Auto Show. A good car combines everything: exciting design, state-of-the-art technology and innovative, environmentally friendly ideas. That is what Opel provides to customers and that’s why it was the most visited.

The day was followed by an anniversary dinner. This event was organized to provide an opportunity to meet dealers around Turkey. Having dinner with people who we work with cooperatively but mostly who we do not know (at least for me – my responsibilities do not require to interact with dealers) made me feel that in fact we are a much bigger family and network than I see in the firm. When we look at our motto, “Wir leben Autos”, “Wir” stands for the excitement and affirmative, positive attitude of our colleagues and dealers. We truly lived this feeling in our gala dinner altogether.

The next day the GM Türkiye employees met at a branch organization for an employee meeting. In this branch event, we met with our families as we did at the gala dinner. Poor me, I am not married yet, thus I was away from my fiancé but instead I was with my colleagues and their families. Then those colleagues who have been in the company since its establishment, which means working for two decades, were gifted in the stage.

In this morning meeting, Alain Visser and Andy Dunston gave small presentations which highlighted the strategic importance of our performance for the global company. Their honoring speeches were motivating and their approach towards us was so friendly.

On the way back to home, I was a hundred percent sure that these two days were so important in terms of setting closer relationships with each other as well as becoming a team. As Alain Visser points out: “If you want to build great cars, you’ve got to put your heart and soul into it, along with all the energy that involves.” Those two days energized all of us towards this aim again. By the way, special thanks go to all colleagues involved and performed in this organization.

Ağustos'ta GM'in Employee Blog'unda yayımlanan yazıma gelen yorumları beklettim, yeterince süre üzerinden geçti, artık yorum yazan olmaz herhalde diyerek onları burada arşivliyorum. Yıllar sonra bugünlerde aldığım keyfi tekrar yaşamak umuduyla...

Volkan - thanks for your post! We often forget, once you've been here a long time, the excitement we felt when we first started at GM. It's a great feeling, and with all that is going on at GM and the momentum we're gaining, it's starting to feel better to me again, too! Don't lose that feeling!

Volkan, I have been at GM about as long as you and I, too, remember the excitement and the sense of awe at working in such a large and complex organization. I also work with amazing people who help to create an environment that encourages outstanding performance and career growth. We are both very lucky. BTW, my husband is also from Turkey and has the same high work ethics and desire to succeed as you do. GM is lucky to have you as part of its organization.

Merhaba Volkan,
Welcome to the company. I have been working at GM for past ten years and I can still recall the great feeling that I had when I started working for this great company. Regardless of the ups and downs that we went through in the past few years, I do believe that great people work for this company and it has the potential to achieve the golden status that it once had. It will just take some effort from all of us to make it happen.

Iyi Gunlar!

Dear Colleagues,

Due to a technical problem, I could not log in to the site this week but finally the problem is solved and I am here to reply to you all.

Your thoughts and good intentions are really very important for me. As I pointed out, being a part of this huge global company is crucial for me and I will do my best to reach again those glorious days of the Company with you.

Just remember our vision statement:
"GM’s vision is to be the world leader in transportation products and related services. We will earn our customers’ enthusiasm through continuous improvement driven by the integrity, teamwork, and innovation
of GM people."

So now is the time to go on working for this wonderful company!

Congratulations and please receive a warm welcome from GM Argentina. I feel exactly the same pride you do feel for GM. I'm very happy to belong to this company and I also joined as a trainee first. I'm working here since 2006, and as time goes by, my feeling towards GM gets bigger and bigger.

Jeffrey - sorry to hear that mate, looks like your comments are more close to reality..don't want to be -ve..but there are phases, i have had best times/projects here, people were/are great..dealt w (victim) of bad practices..but it is getting much better..more flexibility, flatter middle layer, ownership, more ways to prove individuality..so glad to see a newcomer's feedback..at the same time we still have to work out some kinks b4 we can claim the best workplace to work.

Congratulations and thanks for your enthusiasm! After loosing so many of our younger employees in the past few years GM really needs to hire and retain more young, enthusiastic employees, such as yourself, if the company is to do well in the future. I have been with GM a little over 15 years now and I still get a thrill every time I walk in to the plant and see the new cars going down the line.

we have luck to work in this company, really? Try eight years of being in skilled trades and being made to cross train people to take your job, and knowing that you are of low seniority, these people will take over your job, you will be back on the line, or at best you will be working saturdays and sundays, away from your family for straight time, yes we have much luck in this company...........Yes I know you will never post this..

Welcome Volkan, I know that the last few years have been hard for many GM employees. With the great GM products out there right now I see a bright future for you and everyone else at GM, as well as Michael the skilled trade’s person who should try to count the positives, not just the negatives. I have been here for 25 years, and I'm more enthusiastic now than ever. If I had your attitude when I first started here, there is no telling how much better off I would be, as well as GM.

Ronald, count the positives, not just the negatives, you must be one of those that say "just feel lucky you have a job." Everyday we lose something to the company and we are supposed to be happy about this, I guess. GM is again making billions and so it is time workers and the union stop being trampled on.

I've worked for a lot of companies and I feel lucky and proud to work for General Motors. It was a long time goal of mine that I finally realized in 2008. No, it is not a perfect job, or a perfect company. With everything, however, it is up to us to choose what our life will be. I have to question why anyone who has had the negative experiences that some of you feel compelled to write about would stay with a company for 25 years! There must be something good here. We need to take ownership of our decisions. If you're not happy with something, work to change it. Don't rain all over someone elses parade. Congratulations, Volkan, and welcome to General Motors. We're a family here, and families include many different personalities. We don't always agree, but we're all in this together.

Maintain your sence of hope and optimism.
I have worked at GM for 34 years and the one thing that can surely be said, GM provides oppurtunity. Being a poor university student , I dropped out of the university and kept a summer job on the line in the paint shop. I was 21 , sitting in 115 f heat , thinking ,"what have I done?". I said to myself, there was no looking back, so now I will make the best of my decision. I always asked for over time and through the recessions, I was always called back to other plants while others sat at home. I tested and joined the skilled trades and in 3 years, working overtime became a journeyman. All the while ,I continued to go to engineering school at night, paid for by GM , and in five years graduated an engineer. All paid for by GM. I was than promoted to salaried and achieved a masters degree, again , paid for by GM. In the course of time I became a 8th level manager and even stared in a commercial for GM. I would have had no idea of the oppurtunities GM would have provided me. True things have gotten worse lately, but in your position in a developing market country, do not be afraid to reach higher and always educate yourself as much as you can. You to may find it unbelievable how for you may go.
Good Luck !

A veteran of GM.

What a great reminder that we ALL were once young and enthusiastic. If you are inspired by Volkan's comments, remember to keep that enthusiasm strong. We can win with our best attitudes and creativity because this is a great company with the best people. Thanks for the post, Volkan, and welcome to GM.

Reading Volkan's message and the comments that followed brought tears to my eyes.
I can still recall vividly the thrill I felt when I joined GM as a CGIT (college graduate in training.) Actually, it wasn't that hard to remember because even after 40 some years I've never lost that feeling.
I admit that some of the "trials and tribulations" over the years dampened my outlook from time to time, but I would not take a different path if I had it to do over again.
Even now (well into my sixties) I can totally relate to the enthusiasm of new people like Volkan. After a year's abscence I recently returned as a contract employee. I am thrilled to be back and truly enjoy my job with even more enthusiasm than in my younger years.
There is a difference though. When I was new and inexperienced much of my success was attributed to the fact that I didn't know that "things couldn't be done."
Now I can continue to make a difference because I know that "things can be done!"

Reading Volkan's message and the comments that followed made me realize how much I miss the answer me now and employee blogs. The information that was passed on was great and, in my opinion, was showing how GM wanted to keep all informed. This is not being done. The new GM is more secretive than ever.
Volkan, I hope you can make a difference and please, enjoy a long time employment with GM. Welcome aboard.
