Z-Report of Belgrade Finance Workshop

After the 4-day Belgrade Finance Workshop, following a restful Saturday and Sunday, let's take a look at the Z-Report of my Belgrade visit...

My First Belgrade View

I see it as an opportunity to enrich ourselves with the lessons and gains we draw from experiences. I actually gained the most important experience of this workshop right at the beginning. I woke up at 4:30 for my 8:25 flight to Belgrade, filled up my car with gas, set the cruise control to 90 km after I fueled up, found a parking spot at Sabiha Gökçen Airport, and paid for 4 days. After passing through security, when it was my turn for passport control, the officer asked, "What are you doing here?" and informed me that my flight was from Istanbul Airport. The sweat that poured out of my body at that moment taught me a valuable lesson. I did something I had never done before and quickly crossed from Asia to Europe in the left lane, "a little fast." Luckily, I had left for the airport three hours before the flight, so even though I was at the wrong airport, following the rules had paid off.

Upon landing in Belgrade, I went to the place where taxis were waiting to go to the Hyatt Hotel where I would stay. The first five taxis didn't allow me to pay with a credit card, but the sixth taxi accepted, so I chose it.

Before setting out, I had given myself advice to turn these two days of a four-day workshop, which would be spent on the road for two days and in meetings for two days, into an opportunity for mental relaxation. Even though I set Teams offline and configured Outlook to turn off notifications, when I arrived at the hotel before nine in the morning and the room was not yet cleaned, I found myself sitting at a table thinking, "Let me clean up some emails so they don't stay on my mind." By the way, it was a little challenging to get used to the time difference, especially since my flight from Istanbul landed in Belgrade at 8:10, 15 minutes earlier than expected. After receiving my room around 11, I went to a nearby mall, walked around, had lunch, and then walked to the city center using Google Maps. Although I had no problem walking on the way, rain became an issue when I arrived. When I couldn't find a place in three cafes, I finally found a wooden chair in the fourth cafe and enjoyed a book and coffee. I thought about returning to the hotel before the rain got worse and before it got too late, but my umbrella couldn't protect me from the splashing cars on the roadside. Especially when crossing the bridge, the buses not slowing down caused my pants and boots to get wet every time. I went back to the room, warmed my feet with the hairdryer, and recovered. Then, another round of email cleaning, followed by an evening dinner with friends at the hotel, and the first day ended.

The second day had a schedule focused on business matters. The highlight of the day was seeing our former football player Dusko Tosic at the restaurant we went to for lunch. I immortalized my trip to Belgrade by taking a photo with him. For dinner, we went to an Italian restaurant. The food was excellent, and the atmosphere was very warm. Of course, because I sat inside without taking off my jacket, when we went outside, I started shaking so much in the cold night air that my legs seemed to lose control. Fortunately, I quickly returned to normal with some movements before anyone saw.

The agenda for the third day was lighter. After a meeting at the office, we had lunch and then went bowling as a team. In an area where I wasn't competitive, I chose to enjoy myself. I think such activities are very useful for breaking down the walls at the workplace the next day and for teams to communicate more effectively, of course, without going overboard.

The last day coincided with Black Friday. After packing up my room and checking out at 10:00, I went to the nearby mall again. Unlike the first day, there was a tremendous crowd in the early hours this time. Especially the crowd at Zara was comparable to the Zara in Istanbul. Anyway, after buying a outfit for my son Okan and chocolates for home, I completed my shopping duty, first going to the hotel and then to the airport. Speaking of the airport, where are the airports in Istanbul and where is the airport in Belgrade? I observed once again that I was quite knowledgeable about this. Unlike the arrival, this time the flight I boarded at 14:45 landed in Istanbul at 18:30. I arrived home in 1 hour and 15 minutes in Friday traffic and, after the exciting gift presentation and recounting my experiences, returned to our normal life.

Celebrating a Decade at Philip Morris International: Reflections and Gratitude

Exactly 10 years ago on Thursday, August 1, 2013, my journey with Philip Morris International (PMI) began. When I stepped through the factory's doors, it was called Philsa Philip Morris Sabancı Sigara ve Tütüncülük A.Ş. at that time, and my title was General Ledger and Tax Analyst. Even before joining PMI, while working at Opel Turkey (officially called General Motors Türkiye Ltd. Şti.), our factory's neighbor, I always had my mind set on working here, thinking, 'One day, I will work at Philip Morris.' Prior to that, I spent three years at PwC and GM, but my thoughts were always on Philip Morris. When I saw the job posting for the position I eventually started, I felt like the job description perfectly fit me, and that awaited 'one day' was drawing near. The interview process, which started in May 2013, my wife's pregnancy, the days of that summer when we thought about the blessing that the baby would bring, and the anticipation of my first day at work after eagerly waiting for the end of my notice period at GM, all led me to that moment. On that first day, I met new colleagues, experienced working in a production company, and got answers to many things I had wondered about, such as the famous Philip Morris meals. Time flies and today marks exactly 10 years since that day.

There were days when I celebrated with clenched fists as if I had won a championship and days when I couldn't resist but cry. I met people here whom I loved and trusted, as well as colleagues whose paths I wish had never crossed. I dreamed, achieved some of those dreams, and continue to strive and work hard to reach others. Whether they will be granted or not, I cannot know, but I am doing my best and will continue to do so to avoid saying 'I didn't try' when my story at this place comes to an end. When I took that first step ten years ago, perhaps I imagined different things for today, but I know how to be grateful and keep going.

Looking back, I see that I made one of the most important decisions in my life during my Philip Morris journey. In the year 2020, when the pandemic entered our lives, while working as a Senior Tax Analyst, almost every morning, new tax regulations were published in the Official Gazette, and during that time, an opportunity emerged at our Duty-Free affiliate for a position with the title 'Manager,' which I had desired to reach for so long. In those days when remote work was not a common practice as it is today, the fact that this position was in Istanbul made me face a tough decision: either accept and move to Istanbul or reject it and stay in Izmir, wait for another opportunity. When I made the decision that I now say 'Thank goodness' for, I had my wife's support, but I had to separate her from Izmir, a city she loved dearly. Thankfully, Istanbul has always been kind to us. We made one of the most significant changes in our lives with PMI. Building a list of beloved people in Istanbul has been one of the greatest gains.

As I celebrate 10 years at Philip Morris International, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunities, connections, and growth it has brought into my life. This journey has been a testament to the power of dreams, resilience, and embracing change. I am eager to continue my career journey with enthusiasm, determination, and an open heart. Here's to the next chapter and the endless possibilities that lie ahead. Let's keep moving forward together.

Celebrating Three Years of Growth and Achievements! 🌟

I can hardly believe it has already been three years since I embarked on an incredible journey with PMI Duty Free as a Finance Manager. Looking back, it's remarkable to see how much has changed, both in my professional life and personally. 

When I joined the team (on June 1st, 2020) amidst the challenging times of the pandemic, I made a bold decision to move from the beautiful city of Izmir to the vibrant metropolis of Istanbul. It was a leap of faith, but one that has undoubtedly paid off. Embracing this change has not only broadened my horizons but also allowed me to contribute to the growth and success of PMI Duty Free Finance. 

During my time here, I have been fortunate to receive recognition for my hard work and dedication. I am humbled to have received the "Excellence Award" and the prestigious "ABCD Award" for my achievements during the transformation of PMI and Duty Free. One particular highlight was our Finance Transformation initiative in the Duty-Free, which led to our team winning the coveted SFS Co-Pilot Team Award. These accolades serve as a testament to the collaborative spirit and innovative mindset that thrives within our organization.  

Looking ahead, I am excited to share that I have set my sights on embracing more global responsibilities. With a passion for expanding my expertise in global finance, I am actively working towards this objective. I firmly believe that by continuously challenging myself and staying abreast of the latest industry and digital trends, I can contribute to the growth and success of PMI on a global scale. 
 

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities, support, and mentorship I have received during my time at PMI. None of my achievements would have been possible without the amazing colleagues and leaders who have inspired and guided me every step of the way. 
 

As I reflect on the past three years, I am filled with a deep sense of pride and gratitude. I am eager to continue this remarkable journey, making meaningful contributions and driving success for Philip Morris International.

Fethiye, Hillside, Toplantı ve Dahası...

​23, 24 ve 25 Mayıs tarihlerinde Philip Morris Finans ve Admin departmanları olarak 3 gün boyunca Fethiye Hillside'da kalıp bir takım toplantılar yaptık. Pazartesi sabahı 8 gibi fabrikadan yola çıkıp öğlen vakitlerinde otele varıp Çarşamba ise öğle yemeğimizi yiyip 2 gibi dönüşe geçtik.

Yiyip içtiklerimizi anlatıp görgüsüzlük yapacak değilim ama gördüklerimi ve yaşadıklarımı anlatmak isterim... Ee buyrun o halde:

Öncelikle otelde ilk dikkatimi çeken, yüksek fiyat seviyesine rağmen odaların aynı seviyede lüks olmadığıydı. Yalnız yanlış anlaşılmasın, doğal bir güzelliği ve konforu mevcuttu odaların. Doğal demişken; kaldığımız odaya giderken geçtiğimiz yolda mavi bir kertenkele vardı ve dar alanda kendince yaşamını sürdürüyordu. Biz çok dert etmedik ama herkes bundan hoşlanmayabilir.

Böyle bir yerde değerlendirilmesi gereken öncelikli konulardan biri ise deniz, bence Mayıs ayına göre denizi gayet güzeldi. Ne çok sıcak, ne de çok soğuk, ferahlamak için harika bir suyu var. Kumsalının olmaması, plajın taşlık olması dezavantajdı. Çocuklu geldiğinizde kumdan kale yapamayan bir çocuk plajda ailesiyle ne kadar oyalanır bende bir soru işareti yarattı. Plaj ve havuz çevresindeki bar hem kokteyl hem servis açısından çok başarılıydı. Barmen ve garsonların genel olarak pozitif ve güleryüzlü hali sunulan yiyecek ve içeceklerin tadıyla birleşince kesinlikle memnuniyet vericiydi.

Otele ilişkin anılarımı çektiğim "bence" birbirinden güzel doğa ve manzara fotoğrafları ile ölümsüzleştirdim. Bu etkileyici fotoğraflara ek olarak iki ünlü ile çekildiğim hikayesi olan iki fotoğraf var ki, benim adıma 3 günün bombalarıydı. 

Oteldeki ilk gecemde gün içerisinde aktif olarak telefonu kullanmamdan ötürü şarjım yüzde 4 seviyesine inmişti. O anlarda karşımda İsmail Köybaşı'nı kız arkadaşı ile görünce, kafamın da iyi olmasının vermiş olduğu cesaret ile, merhaba diyip fotoğraf çektirip çektiremeyeceğimizi sordum. "Tabii ki" gibi sıcak bir cevap alınca telefonuma yöneldim ama o da ne: "düşük pil seviyesi, kamera açılamıyor" uyarısı. "Arkadaşımdan telefon alıp gelebilir miyim?" diyip cevabı beklemeden bizim masadaki arkadaşların birinin telefonunu alıp tekrar İsmail'in yanına gittim ama bu kez de çevrede aydınlatma olmaması sebebiyle aydınlatması olmayan ön kameradan çektiğimiz fotoğrafta hiç birşey belli olmuyordu. Durumu farkeden İsmail'in kız arkadaşı kibarca fotoğraf çekme konusunda yardımcı olabileceğini söyledi. İsmail'in yardımıyla ön kamerayı arka kamera ile değiştirdik ama karanlık ortam ve yabancısı olduğum telefonun flaşın açmayı beceremediğim için bu fotoğrafta diğerinden çok başarılı değildi. Artık başka çözüm de sunacak halim yoktu, teşekkür edip şampiyonluktan ötürü tebrik edip ayrıldım. Ne yalan söyleyeyim, o gece kafamı yastığa koyduğumda hala içim yanıyordu.

Amaaa, derler ya bir kapı kapandığında başka bir kapı açılır diye, ertesi gün akşamüstü saatlerinde saunadan çıkıp havuz başında bir şeyler içerken bu kez karşı masamda Cem Yılmaz yalnız oturuyordu. Bir arkadaşımla,damarlarımızdaki alkol seviyesinin vermiş olduğu rahatlıkla, yanına gidip niyetimizi söyledik. Sağolsun kırmadı ve güleryüzüyle fotoğrafta yer aldı. Bana da güzel bir Fethiye hatırası olarak kaderin bir hediyesi oldu. Dersimizi de aldık: kaçan fırsatlara hayıflanmak yerine yenilerine odaklanmak lazım hayatta...

Otelimizin ünlülerce tercih edildiğinin de altını çizdikten sonra son bir paragrafta spor salonu için açmak isterim. Hem makinelerin yüksek teknolojisi, hem de ferah ve hijyenik ortamı ile oldukça kaliteli vakit geçirdim salonda 3 gün boyunca. Özellikle göl kenarında sanal yürüyüş yaparak kullanılan epliktik bisiklet ve tavla oynayabildiğiniz koşu bandı spor yaparken sıkılanlar için bile heyecanlandırıcıydı. Ee o kadar güzel hamur işleri, etleri ve tatlıları yiyince biraz olsun vicdanı rahatlatmak için böyle bir konaklamada spor salonuna uğramak iyi geliyor.

İzmir'e doğru yol alırken yazdığım bu yazıyı internet erişimi bulduğumda paylaşmış olacağım. Sıcak hatıralarla dolu Fethiye Hillside'ı da hep iyi anacağım...

Genç ve Zengin Emekli Ol!

Bir süredir Robert Kiyosaki’nin kitaplarına sarmış durumdayım. Kitaplarında vermiş olduğu mesajı hayatıma adapte etmem hemen gerçekleşebilecek bir şey olmadığı için yoğun dozda bu felsefeyi almam lazım, o sebeple ardı ardına kitaplarını bitiriyorum. Kitaplarının Türkçe’ye çevirisi yapıldı mı diye araştırmadım ancak temel olarak Robert’ın vermeye çalıştığı mesajları yazarak paylaşmak istiyorum.

Robert zengin olmaya giden yolda beynimizin önemini işaret ediyor ve beynin kişi için en büyük varlığı ya da yükümlülüğü olabileceğini söylüyor. Beyni lehinize kullanarak zengin olmaya öncelikle onu inandırmanız gerektiğini belirtiyor. Pek çok yerde birbirinden farklı konular için okuduğumuz gibi, olay aslında kafada bitiyor.

“Your brain can be your most powerful asset or it can be your most powerful liability.  If you want to retire young and retire rich, you will need to use your brain in your favor, not against you.”

Genel olarak insanların kafasının nasıl çalıştığını da çok tanıdık bir şekilde özetliyor. Pek çok insanın emekli olduğunda gelirinin düşeceğini söylemesinin bir başka ifadeyle tüm hayatı boyunca sıkı bir şekilde çalışıp emekli olunca da zorlu şartlarla yaşamaya devam edeceğine kendini inandırdığını ifade ediyor.

That is why so many people say, “When I retire, my income will go down.” In other words, they are saying, “I plan of working hard all my life and then I will become poorer after I retire.”

Peki dünyadaki insanların %95’inin bu şekilde düşündüğü belirten Kiyosaki ne öneriyor? İnsanları zengin edecek üç çeşit varlık olduğunu ve bunlara yatırım yaparak kendisinin genç yaşta ve zengin bir şekilde emekli olduğunu söylüyor. Bunlar:

Zengin olmak isteyen birinin başkalarının parasını kullanmayı bilmesi gerektiğinin de altını çiziyor Robert Kiyosaki kitaplarında…

“The poor and middle class have a hard time getting rich because they try to use their own money to get rich. If you want to get rich, you need to know how to use other people’s money to get rich…not your own.”

Robert, parayı kullanmayı bilmenin de iyi bir finans eğitimi ile olacağını, bu temeli oluşturacak eğitimin mutlaka alınması gerektiğini belirtiyor.

Peki kullanılacak bu para nerden gelecek diye sorarsanız, cevap yine kitaplarında mevcut. Parayı akıllıca borçlanarak bulmanız gerektiğini söylüyor Robert. Zenginlerle fakirleri birbirinden ayıranın da borçlanma şekilleri olduğunu belirtiyor.

“The rich use debt to win financially and the poor and middle class use debt to lose financially.”

Zenginlerin fakirlerin parasını ve zamanını kullanarak erken yaşta daha da zengin olduğunu belirten Robert Kiyosaki için çok acımasız olduğunu düşünmenizi istemem çünkü her kitabında insanlara hizmet ve yardım etmek gerektiğinin de altını çiziyor ve verdikçe daha çok geleceğini söylüyor.

“The easiest way to become rich is by being generous. Anytime I want to earn more money, all I have to do is ask myself how I can serve more people.”

Robert üç çeşit varlıktan bahsettiği gibi üç çeşit gelirden de bahsediyor:

Kazanılan gelir – maaş, bonus, emeklilik ikramiyesi gibi

Portföy geliri – hisse, tahvil, bono gibi yatırımlardan elde edilen gelir

Pasif gelir -  Emlak veya işletmeden elde edilen gelir, patent, telif hakkı veya royalti geliri

 

Robert bu gelir kalemlerinden ilkini sevmiyor. İnsanlara maaşlı çalışmaları gerektiğinin iyi bir şeymiş gibi öğretildiğini ve bunun onları köle yaptığını iddia ediyor.

“Teaching people to spend their lives working for earned income is like teaching someone to be a high-paid slave for life.”

Robert’ın en sevdiği gelir kalemi ise tahmin edeceğiniz üzere pasif gelir, yorulmadan para kazanmayı kim istemez ki…

“Why? Because it was the income he had to work the least for, it is often the least taxed, him some of the highest returns consistently over a long period of time. In other words, he worked hard for passive income because, in the long run, he worked less and less, served more and more people, and earned more and more the older he got.”

Robert finansal bilginin önemini ifade ediyor ve buna yatırım yapın diyor demişken çalışan ile işveren olmanın vergisel farkını da okuyucularına oldukça güzel ifade ediyor. Çalışan kişi brüt gelirini elde ediyor, bu kaynağında kesiliyor ve geriye kalanı harcayabiliyor. İşveren ise geliri elde ediyor, harcıyor ve kalan üzerinden vergisini ödüyor. Bu da işletme sahibine ciddi bir vergi avantajı sağlıyor.

A business owner can pay for those things with before-tax dollars while an employee pays for them with after-tax dollars.

Özetle risk almadan, girişimci olmadan zengin olmak mümkün değil. Bir yerlerden başlayıp mantıklı borçlarla kaynak yaratıp, yeni kaynaklar yaratacak yatırımlar yaparak gelir kalemlerini çeşitlendirip gelir tutarını arttırmak lazım. Güvenli yatırım olarak gözüken faiz yatırımının aslında zenginlere bizim gibilerin parasını ucuza kullandırmak olduğunu, emeklilik sistemine yapılan yatırımların borsanın aşağı yönlü hareketleriyle tüm birikimi bir anda aşağıya çekebileceğini, yatırım firmalarına paranızı teslim edip fona yönlendirmenizin cebinizdeki parayı hiç tanımadığınız birine yatırım yapması için vermekle aynı olduğunu söylüyor. Bu sebeple bilgi birikimini arttırarak kendimizin yatırımlarımızı yaparak bize çalışmadan gelir elde edecek kalemler yaratmamız gerektiğini öğütlüyor.
