Currently I am reading the book Hatching Twitter, Nick Bilton’s book about the company’s origins. The most memorable stories in Hatching Twitter almost invariably involve Jack Dorsey, who is 343rd in Forbes billionaires list. Let me share one of them:
Even if Jack Dorsey hadn't started two of the biggest tech companies [Twitter, the social media platform, and Square, a mobile payments company.] in the world, Dorsey would be a fascinating character. A two-time college drop-out, he has studied botanical illustration and dress making, and worked for a time as a massage therapist. According to the book Hatching Twitter by New York Times writer Nick Bilton, he was once so broke in his early twenties that he set up an auction on eBay where he offered to read the children's book Goodnight Moon to the highest bidder. (Four people took up the offer, one of them paying $100.)
The related paragraph in the book [Hatching Twitter] is as follows:
"Jack had done similar bizarre experiments before joining Odeo. In 2002, in his early twenties, he had become enamored with eBay. At the time, he was destitute and didn’t have anything to sell, so he set up auctions where he offered to read the famous children’s book Goodnight Moon over the phone to the highest bidder. He somehow managed to sell his reading service to four different people – one of whom paid one hundred dollars to listen to Jack, a perfect stranger, read."
