Mom’s Sun-cooked Sour Cherry Jam vs. Career

Mom’s sun-cooked sour cherry jam will be ready soon but for now, it needs a little more patience (or let’s call it “sunshine”).  It will absolutely be worth it because you can make it in bulk and store your jam which will last all year. Simply it requires time (the jam will need 2 to 3 days of sun to reduce down into a thick syrupy consistency and the fruit to cook through), effort (the jam should be brought in at nights to prevent humidity) and money (you need to buy sour cherry and sugar).

But here's what all that time, effort, and money can't buy you these days: a career. At least in the traditional sense.

The word “career” itself implies longevity, coherence, and a degree of predictability. We all have built a paradigm that careers are linear paths built over long periods where there is a clear line and rationale from one position to the next.  However, current business realities have been dismantling this notion in recent years. Rapid technological advancement is disrupting whole markets and industries overnight. Companies and jobs we once thought were indestructible will soon disappear. Is any organization today promising a 20-year, a 10-year or even a 5-year job guarantee? And if a company did make you that promise, would you believe it given all the disruption?
